A Brief History of Carr & Carr (Builders) Limited
Carr & Carr (Builders) Limited was formed by Chris Wilford Carr, & his father in 1926.
The main activity of the business was remedial and small ‘jobbing’ work in the Grimsby & Cleethorpes area. The builder’s office, workshop and yard were constructed in the late 1920’s and it still remains the registered office to this day.
In the Thirties, Carr & Carr moved into the delivery of new homes. Initially this was small scale and only in the Cleethorpes area around where the office was situated. One of the first houses to be built was the new Carr family home adjacent to the office & workshop.
In 1934, Chris Wilfred Carr built a new family home in Waltham on the outskirts of Grimsby. This was to become the first of many homes to be built by Carr & Carr in Waltham.
After Bill & Frank (Chris’s sons) served their National Service, they joined the family business, Frank as a bricklayer and Bill as a joiner. After a while Frank decided his ambitions lay elsewhere, so Bill continued to run the family business with his father until his retirement.
Bill then expanded the business and new housing became the main focus of the company. In the 80’s & 90’s Carr & Carr were one of the largest housing developers in Northern Lincolnshire.
It was in the early 80’s that Bill's two sons joined the business. David attended Grimsby College to study Construction Management whilst Chris trained to be a carpenter/joiner and then a JCB driver.
Carr & Carr is still owned by the Carr family and run by the two brothers.
